Let me tell you something: recovering from an eating disorder is a much bigger accomplishment than having an eating disorder.
Guys, I have another question for you
Thank you for all your messages/responses to my question regarding ED education in high school.
I am appalled that this subject is still overlooked. Especially given that in Australia alone:
- The incidence of bulimia in the Australian population is 5 in 100
- Among 15-24 year old females, anorexia has a standardized mortality rate that is 12 times the annual mortality rate from all causes
- The onset of anorexia usually occurs during adolescents with a median age of 17
- At the end of 2012 it was estimated that eating disorders affected nearly 1 million Australians
I didn’t believe for 4 out of the 6 years with ED that I had an eating disorder, because I never knew that anything other than anorexia was a cause for concern. More importantly, I didn’t know where to go or what to do when I did realise I had a problem.
So another question for you guys:
What would have helped you by way of ED/mental health education?
